BJP-MNF-Congress front stakes claim to topple ZPM in Lai Council

Aizawl, Apr 23 (UNI) In a dramatic political twist, a new alliance comprising 13 MDCs (members of district council)—11 from the Mizo National Front (MNF), two from the BJP, and the lone Congress member—has staked claim to form the next executive committee in the Lai Autonomous District Council (LADC), threatening to unseat the two-month-old Zoram People's Movement (ZPM)-led administration.
The coalition, led by BJP member N. Zangura, met Governor Lt Gen (Retd) V.K. Singh at Raj Bhavan on Wednesday evening, parading their strength in numbers. “We have the support of the majority. The Governor has assured swift action, and we are confident of forming the next executive committee soon,” said Zangura, who was recently appointed leader of the joint legislature party formed earlier in the day.
The surprise move follows closely on the heels of Tuesday’s passage of the 2025–2026 LADC budget and the unopposed election of a new Deputy Chairman—developments that took place without the ZPM administration facing a trust vote, as directed by the Governor in a February 24 notification. The budget was passed under the leadership of Chief Executive Member (CEM) V. Zirsanga, despite concerns over the council’s legitimacy.
