BJP govt clears long-pending highway transfer to central agencies for border infrastructure push

Kolkata, May 17 (UNI)A week after coming to power the BJP government in West Bengal approved a long-pending proposal to hand over several stretches of national highways to central agencies, a move which was kept on hold by the previous Mamata Banerjee government.
The decision, taken by the new administration at Nabanna, is aimed at strengthening border security, improving road infrastructure and accelerating development in strategically important areas of North Bengal and the international border regions.
Official sources said the state government has given its approval for multiple stretches of seven national highways to be maintained and developed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL).
