BJD slams Odisha Govt over paddy procurement, farmers’ distress

Bhubaneswar, May 19 (UNI) The Opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Tuesday accused the BJP government in Odisha of failing to fulfil its poll promises to farmers, alleging that problems relating to paddy procurement, token generation and mandi operations were triggering widespread discontent among cultivators across the state.
Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters here, former minister and BJD vice-president Sanjay Kumar Das Burma and party MLA as well as senior general secretary Byomakesh Ray alleged that farmers were being forced to stage protests and road blockades to secure their rights.
The BJD leaders claimed that before the 2024 elections, the BJP had promised to procure paddy at Minimum Support Price (MSP) along with an additional input subsidy of Rs 800 per quintal and purchase all surplus paddy from farmers. However, they alleged that the promises remained unfulfilled even after two financial years.
