BHU’s SATHI facility powers India’s next scientific leap as Jitendra Singh showcases innovation push

New Delhi, May 10 (UNI) Varanasi is steadily emerging as a key destination in India’s scientific and technological transformation, with the Sophisticated Analytical & Technical Help Institute (SATHI) at Banaras Hindu University becoming a major centre for advanced research, innovation and industry collaboration.
Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh on Sunday visited the high-end research facility and hailed it as a model scientific ecosystem that is helping democratise access to sophisticated technologies for researchers, students, start-ups and industries across the country.
Reviewing the functioning of the state-of-the-art centre, the Minister said India is witnessing a significant expansion of scientific infrastructure under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with a strong emphasis on innovation-led development, indigenous technology and collaborative research ecosystems.
Calling SATHI-BHU a “success story for others to emulate,” Dr. Singh said the government’s vision is to ensure that cutting-edge scientific instruments and world-class research facilities are not confined to a handful of elite institutions but become accessible to scientists and innovators from all regions of the country.
Established with financial support of nearly Rs 72 crore from the Department of Science and Technology (DST), the SATHI facility operates through a Section 8 company model within the university ecosystem. The institute has rapidly evolved into a multidisciplinary analytical and technical support centre catering to academia, national laboratories, MSMEs, start-ups and industries.
The Minister said initiatives such as SATHI and FIST are helping create a strong scientific foundation for India’s future by nurturing young talent and encouraging research-driven entrepreneurship. He stressed that such facilities are crucial for achieving the vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat and positioning India among the world’s leading knowledge economies.
The advanced facility houses several sophisticated scientific instruments and platforms, including super-resolution confocal microscopy with live cell imaging, high-end Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy systems, high-resolution mass spectrometry, isotope ratio analysis systems, clean-room facilities and advanced chromatography platforms.
These technologies are supporting high-end research in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, semiconductors, healthcare, food sciences, environmental studies and advanced materials. Scientists and researchers are using the infrastructure for precision analysis, product development, innovation and industrial applications.
Officials informed the Minister that the facility has already emerged as a major research support hub, serving nearly 1,100 users from universities, research institutions and industries. More than 30,000 scientific samples have been processed at the centre so far, reflecting its growing importance in India’s research landscape.
In a major boost to skill development and scientific training, the centre has also trained nearly 1,000 researchers, students and technical professionals through specialised programmes and workshops. Around 60 short-term training programmes have been conducted to strengthen technical expertise and practical research capabilities among young scientists.
Dr. Singh also appreciated the institute for securing NABL accreditation and creating a sustainable analytical services ecosystem with active participation from industries and academic institutions. He noted that the centre’s growing contribution to patents, scientific publications and collaborative research projects is strengthening the link between science, innovation and economic development.
The Minister underlined that India’s scientific progress today is increasingly being driven by integrated research infrastructure, interdisciplinary collaboration and easier access to advanced technologies.
He said facilities like SATHI are not only accelerating research output but are also creating a culture of innovation that can fuel India’s long-term economic and technological ambitions.
The visit highlighted the government’s broader push to transform universities into innovation-driven research hubs capable of supporting both scientific discovery and industrial growth, while empowering the next generation of Indian scientists and entrepreneurs.
