Bharat Pavilion opens in Cannes Film Market

Cannes, May 14 (UNI) A week after hosting the World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES) in Mumbai, India today opened the Bharat Pavilion at the Cannes Film Festival, underlining the country's significance as a global content hub.
"The Indian film industry has brought content to Cannes this year," said Ravi Kottarakara, the president of Film Federation of India (FFI), the apex body of producers, distributors and exhibitors in the country.
The inauguration of the Bharat Pavilion, a window to India and Indian cinema set up at the Cannes Film Market, the biggest film market in the world, by the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) was attended by actor Anupam Kher and filmmaker Shekhar Kapur.
"I am so proud to be an Indian. Indian cinema sells dreams," said Kher. "I am here because Bharat needs me," added the actor, who is attending the Cannes Film Festival for the first time. "After 40 years and 545 films, I am happy to be at the Maha Kumbh of cinema."
"It is not technology, but storytelling that dominates cinema," said Kapur, who is also the Festival Director of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry-run International Film Festival of India (IFFI), Goa. "Culture will survive if we share our stories," he added.
The poster for the 56th edition of IFFI, Goa, which will be held during November 20-28, was unveiled on the occasion.
"India's storytelling influences continents, including France," said Anne-Louise Mesadieu, the special delegate for diplomatic relations of the Paris regional administration, who welcomed co-productions from India in the Paris region.
Among previous co-productions between India and France are last year's Grand Prix winner in Cannes, 'All We Imagine As Light' directed by Payal Kapadia, and 'Girls Will be Girls' directed by Shuchi Talati. Another co-production between the two countries is Indian director Rohena Gera's upcoming production, 'All That We Could Be'. Gera's debut feature film, 'Sir' set in Mumbai, was part of the Critics' Week parallel selection in Cannes in 2018.
The Bharat Pavilion, which showcases India as a global hub for content creation, will host a series of talks and seminars to promote the country's creative economy.
The Cannes Film Market is being held from May 14 to 24.
The Cannes Film Festival, which opened last evening, has three Indian films ('Homebound' by Neeraj Ghaywan, Satyajit Ray's newly-restored film 'Aranyer Din Ratri' and a Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute, Kolkata production 'A Doll Made Up of Clay') in official selection this year.
