Bengal unveils Rs 754-crore healthcare expansion plan, eyes global medical tourism hub

Kolkata, July 20 (UNI) The West Bengal government on Monday unveiled an ambitious roadmap to modernise the state's healthcare infrastructure, announcing projects worth nearly Rs 754 crore under the Centre's Special Assistance Scheme for 2025-26 and outlining a broader vision to transform Bengal into a world-class healthcare and medical tourism destination.
Presenting the plans in the Assembly, Health Minister Dr. Sharadwat Mukhopadhyay said the government was undertaking a series of infrastructure upgrades across major government hospitals while expanding affordable healthcare access through new initiatives in both urban and rural areas.
Among the flagship projects is a major expansion of the IPGMER and SSKM Hospital in Kolkata. A new 10-storey Woodburn Ward, equipped with 131 paying beds, cabins and modular operation theatres, will be constructed. The hospital will also introduce robotic surgery facilities, while its cardiology department will receive a second catheterisation laboratory (Cath Lab).
