Bengal Govt to construct 5,000 km rural roads by March 31

Kolkata, Nov 13 (UNI) The West Bengal Government plans to construct as much as 5,000 km roads in rural areas by the end of the current financial year.
To be constructed under the Gramin Sadak Yojana scheme, the process of tendering has already started.
The State Government at present has to bear 40 per cent of the cost of road construction.
Building an 1-km stretch entails a cost of Rs 50 lakh, while the contractors have to take the responsibility of maintaining the roads for the first five years after they are built.
After the Mamata Banerjee-led Government came to power in 2011, a total of 16,380 km of roads have been built in seven years.
The roads have been one-lane, with a width of 3.75 metres. From now, the new roads would be two-laned with a width of 5.5 metres.
