Beach Boys songwriter Brian Wilson dies at 82, several rockers pay tribute

Los Angeles, June 12 (UNI) Legendary American band The Beach Boys vocalist-bassist (and occasional keyboardist) Brian Wilson, one of the band’s primary songwriters, passed away on June 11 night at the age of 82, due to as of yet unknown causes.

His family, announcing his death on Instagram account wrote: "We are heartbroken to announce that our beloved father Brian Wilson has passed away. We are at a loss for words right now. Please respect our privacy at this time as our family is grieving. We realize that we are sharing our grief with the world."

In February 2024, shortly after the death of his wife and manager, Melinda, it was announced that Wilson was suffering from dementia and that his family members had applied for conservatorship for his safety, reports Loudwire.

Wilson was paid posthumous tributes by several artists such as Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Elton John, David Coverdale, Mike Portnoy, Alex Skolnick, Dave Davies, Gene Simmons, and Mick Fleetwood among many others.

Taking to X, Fleetwood wrote: “Anyone with a musical bone in their body must be grateful for Brian Wilson’s genius magical touch !! And greatly saddened of this major worldly loss!! My thoughts go out to his family and friends - Mick Fleetwood and the Fleetwood Mac Family”

Passing his condolences, Coverdale – best known as the vocalist of hard rock legends Deep Purple and Whitesnake wrote, “Another Giant Passes….”

Thrash metal veterans Testament’s lead guitarist Alex Skolnick mourned his passing and wrote: "Tough week for music. First Sly Stone, now #BrianWilson who arguably pushed rock forward as much as anyone (just ask any of The Beatles). ‘I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times’ is a statement I’m sure many of us could relate too at some point. Time to relisten to #petsounds."

Wilson's death comes just two days after the passing of Sly Stone, also at age 82. "Oh no, Brian Wilson and Sly Stone in one week – my world is in mourning. So sad," wrote Ron Wood of the Rolling Stones.

Mike Portnoy, drummer of progressive metal titans Dream Theater posted a picture of himself with Wilson and wrote: ‘Wow…absolutely shocked to hear that the legendary Brian Wilson has passed away…Paul McCartney has often said that if there were no Pet Sounds, there’d be no Sgt Pepper…and that he thought God Only Knows was one of the most beautiful songs ever written. This is surely a big one… #RIPBrianWilson Rest in Peace reunited with your brothers Dennis and Carl” UNI ANV SSP
