Bangladesh Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed announces gradual withdrawal of army from law enforcement duties

Dhaka, May 7 (UNI) Bangladesh Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed announced that the government had decided to initiate a phased and gradual withdraw of the army from field-level law enforcement duties, due to the restoration of discipline in the police force.
Making his remarks while speaking to journalists at the Secretariat after a meeting on stone quarry management, the BNP minister said that discipline in the police force had been restored ever since the PM Tarique Rahman led administration assumed power.
Responding to questions, he said that Dhaka had initiated special drive against extortionists and local "godfathers". Calling the process ongoing, he added that no one was above the law, and that operations are being conducted across the country using specific lists through joint and separate enforcement actions.
