Awareness on brain death certification will enhance organ donations: K-SOTTO

Thiruvananthapuram, June 13 (UNI) Creating awareness on brain death certification is the need of the hour to facilitate more organ donations to save numerous lives, according to the Kerala State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (K-SOTTO) here on Friday.
Aiming to enhance scientific knowledge and clarity in brain death determination, a one-day training programme for government doctors on certifying brain death is being organised by the K-SOTTO at the Thycaud Guest House on Friday.
The programme aims to provide expert training to doctors on the importance, technical aspects, and legal framework of brain death determination.
Specialist doctors from the departments of General Medicine, Anesthesia, General Surgery, and Pulmonology from various government hospitals in Thiruvananthapuram district, as well as doctors from Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College, are participating in the training, sources said.
The inaugural ceremony, scheduled for 9.30 am, will be attended by Dr. Rajan Khobragade IAS, Additional Chief Secretary, Health & Family Welfare Department; Dr. K.V. Viswanathan, Director of Medical Education; Dr. S.S. Noble Gracious, Executive Director of K-SOTTO; and Binoy Mathew, Administrative Officer.
Prominent doctors will deliver lectures on various topics during the training session. Dr. P. Chithra, Professor and Head of the Neurology Department at Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College, will speak on 'Brain Stem Reflexes'.
Dr. Anil Sathyadas, Professor and Head of the Critical Care Department, will elaborate on the prerequisites for brain stem death testing and the apnoea test.
Dr. Biju Bhadran, Professor and Head of Neurosurgery, will discuss the overview on brain stem death and practical aspects, while Dr. Dhanya Raveendran, Assistant Professor of Forensic Medicine, will explain the legal aspects of brain stem death certification and documentation.
