Awami League ineligible for contesting elections; polls will be 'free, fair', Yunus tells UK Minister

Dhaka, Nov 14 (UNI) Bangladesh Chief Advisor Muhammed Yunus has told a visiting UK Minister that the Awami League has been barred from contesting the February 2026 polls, due to its current ban and suspension of all its political activities under the country's anti-terrorism laws.
Speaking to visiting British Minister for International Development Baroness Jenny Chapman, Yunus however reaffirmed his administration's determination to ensure that the upcoming polls are "free, fair, and inclusive". "The election will be participatory. There will be a big turnout," he added.
