Aster launches India’s first IOeRT for cancer care

Bengaluru, Oct 9 (UNI) Aster DM Healthcare on Wednesday introduced India’s first Intra-Operative Electron Radiation Therapy (IOeRT) at Aster International Institute of Oncology (AIIO), Aster Whitefield Hospital, Bengaluru.
This marks a significant advancement in cancer care, offering precise and targeted radiation during surgery, reducing the need for post-operative radiation sessions and minimising exposure to healthy tissues.
IOeRT is designed to treat residual cancer cells immediately after tumour removal, improving recovery times and patient outcomes.
The facility at Aster Whitefield specialises in advanced oncology treatments, including robotic surgery and Surface Guided Radiation Therapy (SGRT), the first of its kind in Karnataka. The introduction of IOeRT aligns with Aster’s goal of providing state-of-the-art cancer care, supported by highly skilled specialists.
Alisha Moopen, Deputy Managing Director of Aster DM Healthcare, emphasised the hospital’s commitment to precision oncology. She noted that this technology would offer more effective, less invasive treatments, contributing to faster patient recovery.
Dr Somashekhar S P, Global Director of AIIO, described IOeRT as a groundbreaking technology for complex and advanced cancers, where traditional treatments often fall short. This innovation allows precise targeting of cancer cells, reducing recurrence and improving long-term outcomes.
As cancer cases in India are expected to rise by 57.5% by 2040, according to the GLOBOCAN report, IOeRT offers a critical solution for cancers such as breast, gastrointestinal, and lung cancers.
Experts like Dr MS Beliappa, HOD and Lead Consultant - Radiation Oncology at Aster, and Dr Felipe Calvo, Co-Director at Cancer Centre Clinica Universidad de Navarra, highlighted IOeRT’s role in improving survival rates and enhancing the quality of care.
Francesco Zanetti, President & CEO of SIT, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration with Aster, calling IOeRT one of the most promising advancements in cancer care. UNI BDN SSP
