ARM to design Two-Nanometer Chips in Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Sept 16 (UNI) India is making significant strides in semiconductor design and international technology collaboration, union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said here today.
In Bengaluru, Vaishnaw inaugurated ARM’s newly established office, where the global semiconductor design leader will develop advanced two-nanometer chips.
The facility marks a major milestone in India’s emergence as a hub for cutting-edge chip design, reflecting growing global confidence in the country’s skilled talent pool and semiconductor ecosystem.
"I am told that ARM will be designing even two-nanometer chips here in this unit in Bengaluru. This office is a testament to the talent available in India and the progress of our semiconductor mission," Vaishnaw told reporters.
He highlighted that ARM’s chips power a wide range of devices, from mobile phones to servers, and noted that the Bengaluru office underscores the trend of international companies choosing India for high-end semiconductor research and design.
Under India’s semiconductor mission, 278 universities and institutions now have access to the latest Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools. The initiative aims to nurture a robust talent pipeline, enabling students to actively participate in chip design. So far, 28 chips have been successfully developed under the program, showcasing India’s growing technical capabilities.
Vaishnaw congratulated ARM and the semiconductor mission team, noting that the Bengaluru facility will contribute to global innovation while strengthening India’s position in advanced chip design.
Separately, Vaishnaw highlighted India’s expanding partnership with the United Kingdom in technology, strategic collaborations, and critical minerals, including rare earths. He said the collaboration focuses on co-creation, co-development, and advanced processing technologies.
Speaking on the India-UK ties, Vaishnaw emphasised the strong connections between the scientific communities of both countries. He noted that the two nations have signed a Free Trade Agreement and are jointly developing new technologies.
He further pointed out that the union Cabinet recently approved a Critical Minerals Mission. "India has significant deposits of rare earths in beach sands, and we are focusing on developing domestic processing technologies in collaboration with international partners," Vaishnaw said, adding that these initiatives are expected to progress within a realistic timeline, reinforcing India's role in global critical minerals and technology ecosystems.
The developments underscore India's dual focus on cultivating homegrown talent for semiconductor innovation and strengthening strategic international partnerships in technology and critical minerals.
