AP: Ponduru Khadi from Srikakulam receives prestigious GI Tag

Srikakulam, (Andhra Pradesh), Dec 13 (UNI) After years of sustained efforts involving extensive documentation, meetings, and follow-ups, Ponduru Khadi, a traditional handwoven fabric from Srikakulam district, has been awarded the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag, union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu on Saturday.
Ram Mohan Naidu, also a native of Srikakulam, expressed immense pride over the achievement.
In a post on social media, he described the recognition as deeply personal and historic.
“This isn’t just recognition of a fabric—it is the honouring of the legacy of Srikakulam’s weavers. Srikakulam’s pride is now the nation’s pride,” he said.
Calling the moment emotional, the Minister noted that Ponduru Khadi, regarded as one of the finest handmade khadis, played a significant role during India’s Independence movement and was cherished by Mahatma Gandhi.
“It carries generations of history in every thread. Our weavers, despite facing hardships, never abandoned their craft. Their patience, skill, and faith kept this tradition alive,” he added.
Naidu thanked the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) for its support in securing the GI tag and dedicated the achievement to the weavers who preserved the art across generations.
“This GI tag will strengthen their identity, boost livelihoods, and take Ponduru Khadi to the world with renewed glory,” he said.
The GI recognition is expected to provide legal protection to Ponduru Khadi, enhance its market value, and ensure greater economic benefits for the local weaving community.
