Amit Shah likely to visit West Bengal on May 31

Kolkata, May 24 (UNI) Two days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Alipurduar in West Bengal, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to visit Kolkata for a day on May 31.

Though the itinerary of BJP’s second man in command is yet to be announced officially, sources in the party said that Shah would take part in the party’s organisational activities.

Senior state BJP leaders said Shah Shah has a packed schedule for June 1, including participation in an event at Science City, a meeting with BJP MPs and MLAs, and a possible closed-door session with party officials.

“These meetings will centre around devising an election strategy for the 2026 polls. Shah will also see the organisational preparedness of the party before the crucial 2026 assembly polls,” a senior party leader told UNI on the condition of anonymity.

“Although the election is still nearly a year away, the party is keen to begin preparations early. Our performance in 2026 fell short of expectations, and this time, the party is determined to avoid any mistakes,” the leader added.

Shah is expected to return to Delhi either on the night of June 1 or the morning of June 2.

Political observers believe that the back-to-back visits of the party's two most senior leaders are highly significant, because it is an indication that the BJP, learning from its 2021 election results, is likely to take a more strategic and cautious approach in preparing for the upcoming electoral battle.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit West Bengal on May 29, marking his first appearance in the state following the successful Operation Sindoor, a recent cross-border military strike in which Indian armed forces destroyed several terror bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir earlier this month.
According to available information, Modi en route to Sikkim to participate in the 50th anniversary of Sikkim’s statehood will stop at Alipurduar and address a public rally at Parade Ground. The Prime Minister is also likely to attend an administrative meeting in the district the same day.
