Amid protests, TN govt transfer Manamadurai custodail death probe to CBCID

Chennai, Mar 9 (UNI) As the protest by the family members of 26-year-old Akash--who died allegedly due to police torture while in custody following in an assault case--continued for second today at Manamadurai in Sivaganga district-and are refusing to take poessession of his body, the Tamil Nadu Government transferred the investigation to the Crime Branch Criminal Investigation Department (CB-CID) Wing of the State police.
Though police maintained that he developed respiratory issues while being taken to Madurai prison after treatment for his fractured leg, his family members alleged that Akash died due to police torture in custody and have refused to accept his body, and were staging protests by blocking traffic on the Madurai-Rameswaram highway for the second day demanding justice.
Following allegations of custodial death and opposition parties expressing their strong condemnation, the Director General of Police/Head of Police Force ordered transferring the case to the CB-CID for a detailed investigation.
