All stranded tourists safe, evacuation to start from Sunday: Sikkim Govt

Gangtok, Jun 14 (UNI) While seeking help of the Indian Air Force for evacuation of stranded tourists at the landslides ravaged Lachung in North Sikkim, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang on Saturday reviewed the situation and instructed district administration to launch the rescue, restoration and assessment of properties damaged by the recent downpour.
"The tourists stranded in Lachung due to landslides at multiple locations will be taken care of by the respective hotels they had booked for their stay, until the competent authority declares the area safe for travel. The government is already in action, and the evacuation process will start very soon," a latest communique said.
"The family members of the stranded tourists do not need to worry, as all tourists are safe and being taken care of by the designated hoteliers," the statement assured as some 1,200 domestic and 15 foreign travellers have been stuck up at Lachung, nearly 125 km north of Gangtok.
