Aizawl rally protests adoption of FCAA 2023

Aizawl, Sep 11(UNI) A protest rally was held in front of Vanapa Hall in Aizawl today by the Joint Civil Society of Mizoram (JCM), in opposition to the Forest Conservation Amendment Act, 2023 (FCAA 2023), which was adopted by the Mizoram Legislative Assembly on August 27.
The rally featured several prominent speakers, including social and environmental activists such as Ruatfela Nu, ZR Thahmingliana of ‘Mizoram First’ (MF), Joseph Hmingropuia from the Centre for Environment & Social Justice (CESJ), Dr. Vanlalsiama Chhangte of Mizoram Transformation Movement (MTM), and representatives from opposition parties.
Ruatfela Nu highlighted that the FCAA 2023 was opposed by the civil society even before it was passed in Parliament. She noted that Chief Minister Lalduhoma, during his tenure as leader of the opposition, had strongly opposed the amendment act. "However, after becoming the Chief Minister, his government moved to endorse the FCAA 2023 by adopting an official resolution in the state legislature, which contradicts his previous stance," she stated.
