Aizawl Municipal Corporation under fire for crores spent on hiring excavators despite owning machinery

Aizawl, Mar 24 (UNI) The Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) has come under sharp criticism from auditors for alleged mismanagement and unnecessary expenditure amounting to crores of rupees on the maintenance of the solid waste management centre (SWMC) at Tuirial.
The findings were part of the Report of the Director of Local Fund Audit on the Accounts of Local Authorities for the financial years 2019-20 to 2022-23, which was recently tabled in the Mizoram Legislative Assembly by Chief Minister Lalduhoma.
The audit report pointed out that the AMC spent an astonishing Rs 1.26 crore on hiring private JCB excavators for waste management work at the Tuirial dumping site during the 2022-23 fiscal year alone. This is despite the corporation already possessing three excavators, one of which was received free of cost from the State Investment Project Management and Implementation Unit (SIPMIU), while the remaining two were procured at a cost of just over Rs 49.47 lakh.
