AINU doctors perform rare dual kidney-saving surgeries using appendix and autotransplantation

Hyderabad, Apr 22 (UNI) In a remarkable medical achievement, doctors at the Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology (AINU), Hyderabad, saved both kidneys of a 65-year-old man by performing two rare and complex procedures: using his appendix to replace a damaged ureter and later autotransplanting his own kidney.
The patient, from West Bengal, suffered complete ureteral blockages after a routine kidney stone procedure, leading to severe complications and near kidney failure. When conventional options failed, AINU’s surgical team took a highly innovative approach.
For the right kidney, surgeons used the patient’s appendix as a substitute for the damaged ureter in a robotic-assisted procedure—a rarely performed but effective solution. Two months later, the left kidney was saved through renal autotransplantation, where it was repositioned in the abdomen to bypass the diseased ureter entirely.
