About 60 pc nurses in India are Keralites

Kochi, May 13 (UNI) About 60 per cent of the nurses in India are Keralites, and almost 100 per cent of the nurses population at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi are Malayalees, according to an expert here on Tuesday.
"Nursing is no easy task. The bond a nurse shares with the patients is one which a doctor will not have. They are the ones who stick around till the very end and take care of us," Executive Member of the Federation of Hospital Administrators Dr Naresh Purohit said.
"According to a recent WHO report nurses trained in India form a significant portion of internationally educated nurses working overseas, second to nurses trained in the Philippines. It is estimated that over 30 percent of nurses who studied in Kerala work in the United Kingdom or the United States of America, with 15 percent in Australia and 12 percent in the Middle East,” the renowned physician said.
"Kerala’s migrant nurses work predominantly in the private sector. In the Gulf region, Indians comprise 80 per cent of the nurses population, of which Malayalis make up 70 per cent," he added
He pointed that 1.5 lakh crore NRI deposits in Kerala’s banks comes from the sweat and blood of the Malayali nurses.
Malyali nurses are the brand ambassadors of Kerala in the world. They provide soothing balm to patients across continents, he added.
Speaking at a webinar organised by Sree Narayana Institute of Medical Sciences in Ernakulam, on the occasion of International Nurses Day on Monday, the noted Epidemiologist averred that if doctors are the hands of the Almighty, then the cloth which wraps around and comforts us is definitely the nurses who spend their days and nights caring for the patients and remain by their side during agony.
Sacrifice, tolerance, patience and presence of mind are just a few of the excellent qualities they possess, he felt.
