28.77 Lakh Power Bill Cheques Bounce in Latur; MahaVitaran to Initiate Legal Action

Latur, Mar 10 (UNI) A serious issue related to bounced cheques issued towards electricity bill payments has come to light in Latur district of Maharashtra. Several consumers had submitted cheques in an attempt to clear pending electricity dues or to gain time for payment, but many of these cheques failed to clear, affecting the recovery process of outstanding power bills, official sources said on Tuesday.
According to officials, during February 2026, a total of 98 cheques issued for electricity bill payments bounced due to financial or technical reasons. The total value of these cheques was approximately 28,77,919 lakh rupees. As a result, the collection of electricity dues has been disrupted and the amount of arrears is continuing to increase.
Taking the matter seriously, the MahaVitaran administration has decided to initiate direct criminal proceedings against the consumers responsible for issuing the bounced cheques. Officials said that the action will not be limited to administrative penalties, and the concerned consumers may also face legal consequences.
