The song is based on a nearly seven-hundred-year-old folk tale from the ancient village of Thundal, located in the Chaupal Assembly constituency of Shimla district. He said that such creative initiatives play a vital role in preserving and promoting Himachal's rich culture and glorious traditions.
Thakur said that his ancestors also belonged to Thundal village, and the song has made a commendable effort to bring alive the village's historical tale of heroism and migration.
He said that the song offers a glimpse into the region's ancient lifestyle, customs, and traditions, and reflects the depth of local folklore and oral history.

The Education Minister said that 'Thundal Gatha' brings to life a heroic folk tale. The story revolves around Bidan, the head of Thundal village, who had a dispute with the then king over non-payment of taxes.
The dispute gradually escalated into a fierce battle, resulting in the village being set on fire by the king's army. Subsequently, the residents of Thundal were forced to flee and settle in Barthatta in the Jubbal region, Kathwar in Sirmaur, and other areas.
He said the song is sung in the region's original and traditional musical style and symbolises the people's struggle, self-respect, and cultural pride. It is a commendable effort to keep alive the glorious heritage of Himachal's folk traditions and connect the new generation with their roots.
