'Saiyaara' breakout Shaan R Groverr reveals debut series 'Jagdalpur' complete but remains stranded

Mumbai, Feb 16 (UNI) Shaan R Groverr may have earned widespread recognition for his striking performance in "Saiyaara", but his debut film "Jagdalpur" remains unseen.
The film not only revitalised Mohit Suri’s signature romantic-drama template but also catapulted newcomers Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda into mainstream recognition.
For Groverr, the success marked a breakthrough moment, though few are aware that his first project as a lead actor has been lying unreleased for two years.
In an exclusive chat with Variety India, Groverr spoke about the struggles he faced before gaining recognition with “Saiyaara.”
The actor revealed, “I’ve been through everything. I’ve been on a set and I’ve been thrown out. I’ve finished a shoot and that film has not come out. I’ve done web shows that did not perform.
"In the last seven to eight years, I think I’ve literally seen everything. I’ve seen projects where I thought nothing would happen, and I’ve seen something like ‘Saiyaara,’ where I had no expectations. I only did it because I wanted to do a YRF film as my first Hindi film and see where it landed me," he said.
Groverr then spoke about “Jagdalpur,” a show backed by Harman Baweja that he completed in 2023 but which remains unreleased. The story is deeply rooted in Indian mythology. According to Groverr, the series is not merely finished but polished, a creatively ambitious undertaking distinguished by strong writing, evocative music and layered performances.
According to Groverr, he made a mark as an antagonist. Now, he believes he would speak volumes as a protagonist in his debut venture. "It’s a supernatural love story that goes very deep into Indian Hindu mythology — something I think will resonate strongly with audiences today.”
He also confirmed that Red Chillies handled the show’s visual effects, underscoring its scale, yet the series still lacks a streaming home. “Red Chillies was handling the VFX. But ever since it’s been ready, I don’t know what’s happening with it. It’s been ready for a couple of years now. There’s Red Chillies involved, so the show is big — it’s not small — and it’s stuck. Maybe, I don’t know, and I don’t want to comment. Maybe the way it’s made, they don’t want to release it right now. Or maybe they plan to release it later. I don’t know.” UNI NST SSP
