New Delhi, Dec 7 (UNI) Launching a scathing attack against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP over recent incidents of rape and murder, former Congress President Rahul Gandhi and party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Saturday said the reason for the increase in violence, is "because the man who is running this country believes in violence".
Mr Gandhi's response came after the Unnao rape victim, who was set ablaze allegedly by the rape accused, died on Friday night at Delhi's Safdarjung hospital, a day after she was airlifted to Delhi with serious burn injuries.
Talking at an event at his constituency, Kerala's Wayanad, Mr Gandhi said the country is witnessing an increase in violence, lawlessness and atrocities against the women.
“There is a reason for this breakdown of our institutional structures, a reason that people are taking law into their own hands. It is because the man who is running this country believes in violence," he added.
Taking to twitter, Mr Gandhi said the rape and murder of an innocent girl is a shame on humanity.
"One more daughter lost her life while waiting for justice and security. The sad and heart-breaking death of Unnao's innocent daughter, which is a shame on humanity, has angered and stunned me. I convey my condolences to the deceased's family in this time of grief," he tweeted in Hindi.
Ms Priyanka, who is at Unnao to meet the victim's family, questioned why the Uttar Pradesh government did not provide security to the Unnao gang rape victim.
Referring to another case of rape where BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar is an accused, the Congress general secretary, in a tweet in Hindi, said, "Why the Unnao gang rape victim was not given security, keeping in mind the earlier incident of Unnao?"
She further asked what action has been taken against the police official who refused to register an FIR?
"What steps are being taken by the government to stop crime against the women, which takes place on a daily basis in Uttar Pradesh," Ms Priyanka asked.
