Turkey moves to reintegrate PKK members with Draft law aimed at ending decades-long conflict

Ankara, Aug 5 (UNI) Turkey’s ruling alliance on Wednesday submitted a draft law to parliament aimed at advancing a peace process with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), including provisions to facilitate the reintegration of former militants and provide legal protections to eligible individuals who abandon the group and return to civilian life.
The proposed “Law on Strengthening National Solidarity and Social Integration” represents a major step in Ankara’s efforts to end a decades-old insurgency that has claimed more than 40,000 lives since 1984 and contributed to instability within Turkey and across its borders in Iraq and Syria, as per Turkey state media news.
The legislation is part of the government’s “Türkiye Without Terrorism” initiative and seeks to create a legal framework for the return of potentially thousands of PKK members and civilians from their bases in northern Iraq. The bill is backed by a parliamentary majority and is expected to be approved later this week, although public opinion remains divided over whether the move can deliver lasting peace.
