Tripura ADC observes strike in ADC against CAB, IPFT protests in Delhi and INPT to agitate on Dec 5

Tripura ADC observes strike in ADC against CAB, IPFT protests in Delhi and INPT to agitate on Dec 5

Agartala, Dec 2 (UNI) Dawn to dusk general strike of Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) observing tribal-based Tipraland State Party (TSP) today opposing the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB)and demanding a separate state for tribals in Tripura comprising areas fall under ADC has begun peacefully.

Normal life affected severely, as markets were closed, government institutions including schools and colleges were remained closed and vehicles stayed off the road. The pre-board examinations of Class X and Class XII students in ADC areas have been postponed to avoid any untoward incidents.

“In view of the bandh in ADC areas of the state, it is hereby decided to reschedule the following school-based examinations to avoid any untoward incident in the examination process,” said Secondary Education Director U K Chakma in a circular.

A large number of security forces have been deployed across ADC areas, which covered about two-third geographical areas of Tripura to prevent any tension. The ADC run by CPI (M) has also not taken any risk to keep normal the functioning of the administration challenging the strike called by TSP.

“Indigenous people in Tripura have been reducing from majority to a minority due to the influx of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and from other countries. If CAB is passed all illegal immigrants are allowed to stay here permanently then the indigenous people of the Northeastern region will be in danger and slowly we will lose our identity and rights,” TSP president Chittaranjan Debbarma said.

He also said the agitation will continue up to Dec 19 for two demands.

On the other, ruling BJP’s ally in the state government IPFT has also held daylong demonstration opposing CAB and separate Tipraland in Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. Hundreds of IPFT activists and tribal students of Tripura in Delhi joined the demonstration supporting the demands.

Meanwhile, opposition INPT will hold a 12-hour road and rail blockade on Dec 5 protesting against Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB). The INPT president Bijoy Kumar Hrangkhawal told media here that in the consultation meeting on CAB with Union Home Minister Amit Shah was inconclusive and there was no commitment of stopping it. So, the pre-scheduled program of INPT will hold as usual.

He suggested Saha if they want to introduce CAB in the parliament, it must exempt Northeast.

Referring to the move of state government and pro-Bangladeshi intellectuals of Tripura to set up museum and statue etc of the father of the nation of Bangladesh Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahaman in the state, Hrangkhawal urged to stop such venture because it would hurt the sentiment of the indigenous community of Tripura.

“After the accession of Tripura with Indian Union, a large number of Bangladesh refugees were given shelter by the kings of Tripura. During the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, more than the population of Tripura was given shelter here. So, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina should show her gesture towards Tripura by dedicating some institutions and monuments in Dhaka in the name of us. Instead, our government is planning to build museum and parks in the name of Bangabandhu, which is really painful,” Hrangkhawal stated.

He said that tribals and non-tribals have been residing in Tripura peacefully for past decades and if CAB is brought for providing land to more refugees, it would affect the indigenous people of Tripura and added, “India government and Tripura need to tell Hassina government to secure the life and rights of tribals residing in Bangladesh and declare special package for their development.”
