Special Panel Discussion on documentary cinema at IGNCA

New Delhi, May 6 (UNI) Documentary filmmaking was the focus of a special panel discussion held on the third day of the 15th Delhi International Film Festival, organised in association with the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA).
During this, the nature of documentary cinema, its ideological role, objectivity, challenges and its relevance in the contemporary media landscape were discussed in detail.
Writer and filmmaker Abhay Mishra and filmmaker Rajesh Amrohi expressed their views in the program, while Tripti Srivastava conducted it.
The speakers stated that a documentary is not merely a collection of facts, but also a medium of sensitive presentation and perspective. They emphasised that whether a documentary can be completely unbiased is an important question, as the filmmaker's perspective and presentation style influence its form.
The difference between journalism and documentary was also highlighted during the discussion.
Experts noted that journalism provides immediate information, while documentary films delve deeper into the social, cultural, and human aspects of a subject. They underscored that documentary cinema is not merely an alternative medium, but has become an effective tool for social discourse and public opinion-building. Furthermore, they cited the lack of funding and publicity for documentary films as a major challenge.
Rajesh Amrohi said that the audience for documentaries exists, but filmmakers will have to make active efforts to connect with them
Whereas Abhay Mishra said that the camera itself does not lie, but the person standing behind it presents the truth according to his point of view.
The programme saw significant participation from students, researchers, filmmakers, and art lovers involved in film, media and culture. The audience enriched the discussion by putting probing questions to the experts. UNI NST SSP
