S Korean coach Kim takes the helm of Chinese short track team

Hailar, China, Jun 13 (Xinhua) Former South Korean national head coach Kim sun-tae has taken the helm of the Chinese short track speed skating team, Chinese speed skating head coach Wang Meng told reporters on Thursday.
"We have invited many international coaches and staffs to help the Chinese speed skating team. Kim has been appointed as the head coach of the short track team," said Wang, the four-time Olympic gold medal winner who is in charge of both the national short track and long track teams.
After leading the South Korean team to win three golds, one silver and two bronzes at the PyeongChang Games in 2018, Kim is expected to help the hosts of the 2022 Winter Olympics to extend their glory in short track speed skating. Short track speed skaters contributed to 10 out of a total of 13 gold medals that Chinese athletes have won in the last five Winter Olympic Games, but failed to land a single title at the World Championships in 2019.
"The Beijing Olympic Games are still three years away, it's hard to predict the results now. I would like to take one step at a time and focus on our training," said Kim. "Miss Wang and I are good friends, so I am very happy to come here to help more Chinese skaters get better."
"Everything is very good, all we need to do is trying our best in the training," Kim added.
Over a dozen of foreign coaches and staffs have joined the Chinese national short track team including Derrick Campbell of Canada.
Rutger Tijssen of the Netherlands has been appointed as the head coach of the Chinese speed skating team with both Kim and Tijssen reporting to Wang Meng.
Wu Dajing, who had become the first Chinese male skater to capture a gold medal at Winter Olympic Games as he claimed the men's 500 meters in PyeongChang, was looking forward to having better performance in the next season after finishing runner-up in the last World Championships in Sofia in March.
"I have just started training and I am doing well right now. Our goal is to perform well at the Beijing Games in 2022," he said.
