Real Madrid president drops 'French' hint over transfer target

Madrid, Sep 12 (Xinhua) Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has dropped a big hint over who the club's next main transfer target will be.

Although Real Madrid spent over 300 million euros this summer on players such as Eden Hazard, Luka Jovic and Ferland Mendy, the club failed in its bid to sign Paul Pogba from Manchester United.

Speaking in a meeting with a selected group of club members, Perez was asked about his transfer policy and specifically about 'signing a Frenchman'.

He replied "They won't sell him to us. Of course we like a French player and we will try to sign him. But they won't sell."

The question is whether Perez was talking about Pogba, who was coach Zinedine Zidane's main target ahead of the new season, or Paris Saint-Germain's Kylian Mbappe, who has also been linked with Real Madrid.

Manchester United were determined to hold onto Pogba for the new season, while Mbappe is PSG's star player and with Neymar Jr's long-term future seemingly being elsewhere, Mbappe is a vital member of the French outfit, who will face Real Madrid in the group stage of this season's Champions League.
