New Delhi, May 31 (UNI) Mercury dipped in several parts of India including national capital on Sunday bringing some respite from the scorching heat that swept the country from past few days, however, wreaked havoc in Uttar Pradesh during the past 24 hours claiming 29 lives and injuring 50 others.
Eight deaths were reported from Unnao district, during thunderstorm but most of the deaths were due to lightning. Five deaths were reported in Kannauj and Rae Bareli each, three in Agra, and one each in Lucknow, Kanpur, Banda, Fatehpur, Lakhimpur Kheri Muzaffarnagar and Mainpuri.
Official sources said that the families of the deceased would be given Rs four lakh as compensation announced by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
Meanwhile Indian Meteorological Department warned of cyclonic storm in Maharashtra, Gujarat by June 3. A low pressure area formed over the Arabian sea and Lakshadweep is likely to intensify further into a cyclonic storm and reach coastal states of Maharashtra and Gujarat by June 3, IMD said.
CAPITAL
The maximum temperature in Delhi settled at 34.6 degrees Celsius, six notches below the normal. According to Indian Meteorological Department, rainfall recorded in the city till 1730 hrs at Safdarjung station was 2.2 mm, 10.2 mm at Palam, 2.7 mm at Lodhi road, and 35.1 mm at Ayanagar. The minimum temperature was recorded at 20 deg C, seven notches below the season’s average.
IMD further predicted that the national capital could again witness a rainy day on Monday.
NORTH
The weather turned chilly on Sunday as the mercury settled about 10 degrees below normal during the day due to intermittent incessant rains and overcast conditions in the summer capital, Srinagar and other parts of Kashmir valley.
Meanwhile, a weather warning for Isolated Thunderstorm (TS), lightening, hail and gusty winds (30 to 40 km per hour) has been issued for the next three days in Jammu and Kashmir under the influence of a Western Disturbance (WD), which is active in the region.
A Met department spokesperson told UNI that widespread light to moderate rain or thunders could be experienced in the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir and isolated light rain in UT Ladakh during the next 24 hours.
In Himachal Pradesh, too, rains lashed several parts of the state. Since last night, Sundernagar in Mandi recorded 99 mm rainfall, followed by Bilaspur 87 mm, Bangana in Una 80 mm. The queen of hills -- Shimla -- 63 mm while the winter capital -- Dharamshala recorded 22 mm.
Hamirpur, which houses maximum COVID cases recorded 32 mm of rainfall.
