Pak 9th largest arms importer in world, but imports decreasing

Islamabad, Mar 13 (UNI) Pakistan is the 9th largest importer of major weapons in the world, but the country has witnessed a staggering 36 per cent decrease in arms imports during the last five years, according to a report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).
Published on Monday, the SIPRI report has emphasised that the decrease in the import of weapons by Pakistan can be attributed to the country’s deteriorating relationship with Washington, previously a major source of arms for Islamabad, said a report published in The Express Tribune on Tuesday.
Global arms experts in Sweden believe the sale of weapons to the country has recently come under increased scrutiny as the global non-proliferation regime has moved to enforce international sanctions, placing certain suspect organisations and individual dealers on trading black lists.
