Over 6 lakh Indians took up foreign citizenship since 2017

New Delhi, Dec 9 (UNI) A total of 6,08,162 Indians gave up their Indian citizenship and acquired foreign citizenship since 2017, with the maximum headed for the US, followed by Australia and Canada.
The individuals relinquished their Indian citizenship for reasons personal to them, the Rajya Sabha was told today.
According to figures presented in Parliament by the Ministry of External Affairs, the year 2017 saw 50,803 Indians seek citizenship in the US, with the number rise to 57,603 in 2018, and 61,683 in 2019. The figure dropped to 30,828 in 2020, and has again seen a rise in 2021, at 55,559.
