NGO claims gas tragedy survivors at increased health risk

Bhopal, Dec 1 (UNI) A non-governmental organisation claimed on Tuesday that there is significantly higher prevalence of obesity and thyroid disorders among survivors of the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy.
In a release, the Sambhavna Trust Clinic said that analysis of data on Body Mass Index and diagnosis of thyroid malfunction of 27,155 individuals under its care for the past one-and-a-half decades reveals that persons exposed to Union Carbide’s deadly vapours were 2.75 times more likely to be overweight and 1.92 times more likely to suffer thyroid complications. These people are likely vulnerable to diabetes, hypertension, coronary heart disease, osteoarthritis and cancers of the liver, kidney, breast and ovary besides other maladies.
