MPEDA all set to launch its multi-species aquaculture complex

Kochi, Jun 21(UNI) Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) is all set to launch its sprawling multi-species Aquaculture complex at Vallarpadam, near here.
This was informed by MPEDA Chairman Dr A Jayathilak, IAS, to the visiting media persons, taken to the most modern aquaculture complex here on Thursday.
He said the unique feature of the facility would be its tiger shrimp hatchery with a production capacity of 20 million disease-free high health seeds per annum.
Spread over 8.5 acres, the facility would produce, specially export demanded, seeds/fingerlings of 6-7 commercially important species, including Tiger Shrimp, Asian Seabass, Pompano, Cobia, Genetically Improved Farmed Tilapia (GIFT) and Mud crab, he said.
‘’This effort will receive the Black Tiger shrimp farming after a gap of two decades and will certainly bring about huge returns, as demanded and price for good quality tiger shrimp is very high demand in the International markets, particularly in Japan and European Union,’’ he added.
Stating that one of the major impediments while undertaking black tier prawn farming was the lack of healthy and disease free seeds, Mr Jayathilak said that ‘’serving as a model, the facility at Kochi will pave way to establish similar facilities in other parts of the country.’’
The hatchery was designed in an innovate model such a way that depending on demand, the facility could be utilised for seed production of other freshwater and marine fin fishes or shell fishes like seabass, cobia, pompano, grouper, scampi and GIFT.
Regarding the other objective of the facility, he said it was to infuse diversity in Indian aquaculture through the production and supply of seeds / fingerlings of many commercially important species.
It would also help the judicious exploitation of the vast marine, brackish and freshwater resources available in the country, especially in the western coastal states, the MPEDA Chairman added.
