MHA extends validity of NGOs registered under FCRA till May 31

New Delhi, Jan 14 (UNI) Giving relief to non-profit organisations which registered under Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA), the Union Home Ministry has extended the validity of their registrations expiring during the period between September 29, 2020 and May 31, 2021 under the law till May 31 this year.
The Foreigners Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), in its January 12 order said “To ensure smooth transition to the amended regime of the law and in exercise of the power conferred by section 50 of the Act, it has been decided in the public interest that the registration certificate expiring during the period between September 29, 2020 and May 31, 2021, shall remain valid up to 31, May 2021.”
The FCRA Act has been amended last year and the amendment has been notified on September 29, 2020, which includes amendment in the provisions of section 16 of the Act, the order further said.
Under the amended law, furnishing of Aadhaar numbers by office-bearers of Non Governmental Organisations (NGO) has been made mandatory for registration. The Act also provides for reduction in administrative expenses of any of such entity receiving foreign funding, from 50 percent to 20 percent of annual funds to ensure spending on their main objectives.
While bringing the amendments in the law in Parliament, Minister Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai had said that the legislation was not against any non-profit organisation and is an effort to maintain transparency. This amendment is in the interest of good ornaisations, which want to do good work in the country, he added.
