Madhuballa, Google's Valentine

Madhuballa, Google's Valentine

New Delhi, Feb 14 (UNI) Did you knew the 'Queen of Indian cinema' Madhuballa was born on Valentine’s Day.

Well, Google does.

The black and white beauty was adored on Thursday-the Valentine's Day-as the US giant search company, portrayed her on its 'doodle'.

'In morning, when I opened the internet, I saw Madhuballa on Google's logo. It made my day, as my memory went back to those golden days,' a senior Delhi resident, Lakhi Chand told UNI.

Excited, Mr Chand took no time in putting his favourite track 'Accha ji main haari chola maan jao na' on the music system.

'I kept listening to her tracks, and this made my Valentine's more beautiful,' the 64-year-old, retired employee said.

Madhuballa, born in British India on February 14, 1933, took hearts of many by her famous 'Monalisa-like' smile, an innocent child-like face and serene beauty.

She made her debut on large screen in a minor role at a tender age of nine with the film Basant (1942).

Hitting the screens as the lead actress in Neel Kamal (1947) at 14, her career lasted for 22 years. Her last movie was Jwala (1971).

Madhuballa's role in periodic movie Mughal-e-Azam (1960), made her so famous that 'Anarkali' became a household name. In the movie, the actress played the love interest of Mughal Emperor Akhbar's son Salim, played by Dilip Kumar. Her role became the lover's quote.

Madhuballa received the Filmfare Award of Best Actress for Mughal-e-Azam. This was her only nomination in her short career.

Her charming persona took the heart of late legendary Indian singer Kishore Kumar, known for his yodeling voice.

The couple worked in films such as Dhake Ki Malmal (1956), Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1956), Half Ticket (1962), to mention a few.

Unfortunately, Madhuballa, also called as the 'beauty with tragedy,' died in 1969 at the age of 36, after suffering from prolonged illness.

But even in her short career span, she delivered more than 70 films.

The talented actress experimented with a variety of roles in movies like Dulari (1949), Beqasoor (1950), Tarana (1951), Amar (1954), Mr and Mrs 55 (1955), Howrah Bridge (1958) and many more.

The actress shared the screen with almost all established actors of that time, including Dev Anand, Guru Dutt, Ashok Kumar and Dilip Kumar.

Madhuballa was compared to Hollywood actress Marilyn Monroe, another powerhouse performer, who had a similar career span, while the end came suddenly for both.

'Madhuballa's beauty and glory still linger in my old and tired eyes,' the Delhi resident added.
