Lokmanya Tilak made unparalleled contribution to freedom movement: HM Shah

New Delhi, Aug 1 (UNI) Paying rich tribute to the freedom fighter Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, the Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday said that he made unparalleled contribution to freedom movement.

Inaugurating a two-day international webinar on the theme of 'Lokmanya Tilak - Swaraj to Self-reliant India' organized by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations on the 100th death anniversary of the great freedom fighter Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak here, he said “ Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak played a key role in the making of the Indian Independence movement complete in letter and spirit.

The Union Home Minister said that the slogan of 'Swaraj is my birthright and I shall have it' given by Lokmanya Tilak, will always be written in golden letters in the history of the Indian Independence Movement and this slogan served to awaken Indian society and convert the freedom movement into a mass movement, due to which he came to be known as Lokmanya Tilak.

“Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak made India’s freedom struggle Indian by advocating the fact that progress in any form could never be achieved without having appreciation for past glories”, the Union Home Minister said.

Highlighting Tilak’s contribution in bringing about social reforms, the Home Minister said, the great leader agitated against cow slaughter, as he also fought for women’s rights, published the Kesari newspaper and even turned Shiv Jayanti and Ganpati festivals into a public movement. “If anyone, who took the values of Shivaji Maharaj to the people, it was Tilak,” he added.

Mr Shah while highlighting Tilak’s contribution, said, “If you read the thoughts of Mahatma Gandhi, Veer Savarkar and Madan Mohan Malviya, you can easily make out that all of them had a bit of Tilak in them.” He also urged the youth to read about Tilak and his work.

Drawing a parallel between Tilak’s thoughts and those of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Shah said, “It was Tilak’s advocacy for local languages in the Congress that made everyone speak in their mother tongue during its meetings. Today, PM Modi has brought in Sanskrit and local languages into government’s education policy.
