J&K LG to inaugurate upgraded M A Stadium

Jammu, Jan 14 (UNI) Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Girish Chandra Murmu will inaugurate much awaited Maulana Azad Stadium here on Wednesday.
The stadium will be inaugurated ahead of Republic Day function which would be held at the stadium.
Pertinent to mention here that after civil society, cricketers and the citizens of Jammu raised concern and appealed to the administration to cancel the function at the venue in view of plan of hosting an IPL match in the coming months, the rehearsals for the Republic Day function were shifted to the University of Jammu.
However, shifting of Republic Day celebration function from M A Stadium to an alternate venue, was one of the major and long pending demands of the sportspersons and sports lovers so that activities do not get effected when competitions of national and international level are round the corner.
Maulana Azad Stadium is coming up as an international level infrastructure exclusively for cricket and the government is also planning to host one of the matches of Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2020.
“Mr Murmu will inaugurate the M A Stadium on Wednesday,” said an official adding that a friendly cricket match besides some demonstrations of sports events will also be held at the venue after inauguration.
The Maulana Azad Stadium every year is closed for sports activities for around two months from mid of December till January ending due to security reasons for Republic Day and ‘Beating the Retreat’.
The cricket stadium has been upgraded at the cost of around Rs 50 crore under Prime Minister’s Special Package and supervised by the National Projects Construction Corporation (NPCC).
The Stadium will have a well established Pavilion, Standard Gymnasium, Conference Halls, Open VIP, Media and Players Zones and Galleries, and not to talk of the customary Dressing and Changing Rooms besides Match Referee Rooms, Umpires Rooms, Medical Rooms an Dope Test Rooms in a modernised fashion.
There will also be a provision of establishing around 20, 000 seats in the entire Stadium, including VIP Galleries in the Pavilion.
