GDP may not be relevant in future, says BJP MP Nishikant

New Delhi, Dec 2 (UNI) BJP lawmaker Nishikant Dubey on Monday said the GDP has "no relevance"
and maintained that sustainable development and happiness of common people should be considered more important than the GDP.
Participating in a discussion on the Taxation Law Amendment Bill, Mr Dubey said the GDP as an economic indicator came in 1934 and economists have said in the past that it is not the ultimate truth.
"The GDP has no relevance to this country," he said and maintained that the new theory is whether sustainable economic welfare had reached the last man in the queue.
"Sustainable development is more important than the GDP," the BJP MP said.

Last week, the GDP figures of the July-September quarter dropped to a six-year-low of 4.5 per cent, the worst since 2013.
Analysts attribute the same to a combination of low manufacturing, drop in exports, agriculture and mining activity.
