Bollywood lauds Centre's move to amend POCSO Act

New Delhi, Apr 22 (UNI) Bollywood fraternity has hailed the Central Government, after the Union Cabinet approved an ordinance to amend the POCSO Act for introducing death penalty in cases of rape of children below 12 years.

Veteran actress and talk show hostess Simi Garewal appreciated the step taken by the Centre.

“This step is really good. I cannot sleep at night when I hear about such cases. I don't know what is happening in our country. This is not our India,” Simi said.

Actress Kriti Sanon also lauded the Government.

“Really glad that such a strong punishment would be given to such people. I am really happy that it has finally happened. I feel angry whenever I hear about such cases,” Kriti said.

Welcoming the decision , Actress Aditi Rao Hydari said it is a victory for every girl in India.



"I am very happy that such a step has been taken by the government. It is a victory for every girl and her parents in this country. It is a great day to get this news," she stated.

Actress Shilpa Shetty said,”I think it is a good step. People who do such horrifying crime should be punished in the harshest way possible.”

Actor Shahid Kapoor said,”A very harsh punishment is required to create a certain mindset in the people who even think of such horrifying crime. It is important to put something very strong as an example for them.”

It may be noted, on April 13, actresses Huma Qureshi, Aahana Kumra,Sonam Kapoor, Swara Bhasker, Koena Mitra, Gul Panag and filmmaker Alankrita Shrivastava took the placard in their hands and condemned the heinous incident of rape of a minor.

'Rape is an act of violence. It should be banned. I am Hindustan.I am Ashamed. #Kathua and lest we forget #unnao Shame on us! #BreakTheSilence #EndTheComplicity #ActNow,' the placard read.

On Saturday, acting on the widespread uproar caused by the recent incidents of rape in Unnao, Kathua and Surat, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved an ordinance to amend the POCSO Act to provide death penalty for rapists of girls below 12 years of age.
