Bangladeshi arm smuggler caught in Tripura police net

Agartala, Feb 19 (UNI) Dhalai district police of North Tripura arrested a Bangladeshi arm smuggler with an Italy-made pistol from Sealdah-Agartala Kanchenjunga express at Ambassa railway station last night.
Based on a secrete information, police conducted a search in the train and detained 25-year-old Suman Chakma, a resident of Bagapara village under Matiranga police station of Khagrachari district of southern Bangladesh with the weapon.
The accused youth claimed that he was not involved with the arms business but he had been carrying arms from India to Bangladesh for a man of his village named Giyas Uddin (35). This was the third time, he was illegally moving weapon for the person, who take care of his cross border movement and other expenses, including money spent on carrying the arm.
According to Chakma, there was severe crisis of work in Bangladesh, and he got involved in the illegal activity for the past few months to take care of his ailing parents.
He claimed, on February 10 last he crossed Bangladesh border in Karbok area of Amarpur in Gomati district, and after overnight stay at Agartala railway station, he left for Lumding by train with the help of a local person.
“As per agreement, a Naga man handed over the pistol to me, three days ago in the hotel in Lumding, where I was put up. Yesterday morning, I boarded Agartala bound Kanchenjunga express, and I was scheduled to cross the border this morning through the same part of the border,” Suman confessed to police.
The officer in-charge of Ambassa police station Himadri Sarkar stated that they got an input in the afternoon that Suman Chakma was travelling with arms. With the support of railway police they were able to catch him from the train.
Today, police forwarded him to court seeking his remand.
In a separate raid, North Tripura district police yesterday arrested a drug peddler and his female accomplice, and seized about 30,000 Yaba tablets worth Rs 60 lakh from a house at Rajbari area of Dharmanagar.
Acting on a tip-off, SP (North) B P Chakraborty raided the house of one Sabuddin and detained Badsha Mia (40), resident of Fultali (Matinagar) under Amtali police station.
Police got the information that Mia had reached the accommodation of Hafija Begam, who is the tenant of Sabuddin, on February 17 night from Silchar with the consignment of Yaba tablets, used as an addictive drug in Tripura and Bangladesh.
Police said Badsha was about to take Agartala bound train from Dharmanagar in the early morning. Sensing presence of police, they returned to the rented house from the station.
During the search in the room, police recovered the contraband drug but both the accused had disowned the consignment. However, Hafija's daughter appeared before the police and unearthed the truth.
According to reports, Badsha Mia has been involved in drug smuggling for a long time.
