Asia Bibi case: 55 held during Faizabad protest in Pakistan

Islamabad, Jan 30 (UNI) Pakistan Police arrested 55 people in an agitation, called by various religious parties in Faizabad on Wednesday.

The strike was called against the Pakistan Supreme Court's decision to throw out a review petition against its earlier verdict acquitting Asia Bibi, a Christian woman, who spent eight years on death row, wrongfully accused of blasphemy.

There were arrests in parts of Punjab and Karachi, local media reported.

The protest started on Tuesday night in Rawalpindi, Attock, Jhelum and Chakwal districts.

According to reports, the Tehreek-i-Labaik Pakistan (TLP) claimed that "many people" were arrested in Karachi

On October 30, 2018, TLP had launched a countrywide protest against the apex court, for overturning the death sentence awarded to Asia Bibi by a trial court, which was upheld by the Lahore High Court.
