Amar Singh, a politician who remained more behind the scenes, passes away

New Delhi/Singapore/Lucknow, Aug 1 (UNI) Former Samajwadi Party leader and Rajya Sabha member Amar Singh died on Saturday afternoon in a Singapore hospital, following prolonged illness.
He was 64 and survived by wife Pankaja and daughters Disha and Drishti.
Singh was ill for a very long time and undergoing treatment in a Singapore hospital for several months.
He had earlier suffered kidney failure in 2013. As per sources, Singh had recently undergone a second kidney transplant. Though the transplant was successful, there was a wound in his abdomen, which never healed.
Sources said that Singh's mortal remains were being handed over to his family.
Singh was born in Aligarh on January 27, 1956 and gained his education from Kolkata in West Bengal. He started his political career with Congress and remained a member of Youth Congress. However, tables turned in 1996, when Samajwadi Party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav offered him his party's membership.
Singh, through his links in industrial corridors, brought investment to Uttar Padesh and in return, got a Rajya Sabha seat on SP ticket.
He also brought Hindi cinema actors close to him and remained a close affiliate of superstar Amitabh Bachchan.
However, an unexpected incident during the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government in 2008 sank his political innings.
Dr Manmohan Singh-led UPA went for trust vote after Left parties took their support after US-India Nuclear Deal. During the vote, a bag full of notes surfaced in floor of house and it was alleged that Singh was trying to bride the Parliamentarians.
However, he was not convicted.
Soon, he was sidelined with the coming of Akhilesh Yadav in UP politics and becoming the chief minister in 2012.
Singh even tried to float his own party, but it did not click.
But, fortunes again turned for him. In 2016, he was appointed again as Rajya Sabha member on SP ticket. Lately, he remained out of picture, owing to ill health.
President Ram Nath Kovind and Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu mourned the passing away of Singh.
Offering his condolences to the bereaved family, the President in a message said "Sad to hear about the demise of Rajya Sabha MP Amar Singh. Rich in multidimensional personality, Mr Singh was a talented MP."
The Vice-President said "In this hour of grief, I express my heartfelt condolences to his family and associates and pray to God for the peace of the departed soul. Om Shanti," the message said.
SP president Akhilesh Yadav said that he would miss the love and affection which he got from Singh.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed grief over the demise of the leader. "Mr Singh was an experienced and senior politician," he said in a message and conveyed his condolence to Singh's family.
Union Defence Minister and Member of Parliament from Lucknow, Rajnath Singh, in a tweet recalled how Amar Singh had friendship with every politician.
