Zero-emission buses to keep pollution in check at IGI Airport

By Rishira Jain
New Delhi, Nov 8 (UNI) Taking into consideration the serious threat of rising pollution levels in the national capital, PMI, India’s largest commercial vehicle manufacturing company, has joined hands with the Chinese automobile giant Beiqi Foton Motor Co Ltd, to launch zero-emission electric buses, at the Indira Gandhi International airport.
The companies, considered numero uno in their respective countries, have introduced these battery-based electric vehicles in the national capital, after having their successful run in the hill state of Himachal Pradesh.
Speaking on the occasion, Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways General V K Singh said ''This joint venture is a perfect example of growing co-operation between India and China, which is very essential for the development of the two countries.
''It is also a step in the right direction, getting an inch closer to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of achieving 100 per cent electric mobility in the country by 2032.
''China has been leading the electric mobility revolution. With India going ahead with it's Make in India initiative, building it's own machines and parts, with the help of Chinese expertise, it's a win-win situation for both,'' he added.
Recognising India’s growing transportation need and its dependency on fossil fuels, Foton PMI is continuously striving to reduce the effect of pollution on our environment, said Satish Kumar Jain, Managing Director of PMI.
The Electric buses hold a two-fold social responsibility of ensuring pollution reduction in the city as well as stabilising the corporation against the rising fuel, he added.
According to Moshina Malhotra, Managing Director of Harigo Engineering, ''This is a start towards sustainable transportation in Delhi.
''Combating air pollution with electric buses in one of the most polluting sectors- Aviation sector is like making a bigger jump in helping the environment become more liveable,'' she added.
It's specifically designed for the Indian market, said Manvi Jain, head of Corporate Affairs, PMI.
She said the production of new buses has already begun in the manufacturing facilities, with a seating capacity of around 42, 35 and 30 people. The buses are designed in such a way that they can easily accommodate differently-abled people, she added.
The company is targeting monthly sales of 250-300 units while production target are around 1000 buses in the coming months, said Ms Jain.
