Yechury demands EC action against assaults on four CPM workers in poll violence

Yechury demands EC action against assaults on four CPM workers in poll violence
New Delhi, Apr 22 (UNI) CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury has written to Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi strongly protesting against murderous assaults allegedly by Trinamool Congress workers on party leaders on the eve of polling in West Bengal Assembly elections, leaving four Communist supporters dead. The letter stated that the CPI(M) leader was writing to register strong condemnation over the ''continued violence, terror and intimidation'' unleashed by the ruling Trinamool Party in West Bengal. In the first incident, Noor Islam Mistry, a CPI(M) worker, was murdered in Haroah constituency of North 24 Paraganas on the eve of polling. Yesterday, polling agent Tahidul Islam was killed by firing and bombs hurled at Haridoba Natunpara Primary School allegedly by Trinamool miscreants that left 11 injured. The letter also mentioned the deaths of Sk Fazal Haque, polling agent and Dukhiram Dal who were reportedly murdered by AITC goons under the leadership of party candidate Nabin Bag. Mr Yechury said he was writing to the EC because all poll-related violence came under the remit of the EC as mandated by the Constitution. ''So far, no action appears to have been taken against the culprits who have perpetuated such murderous assaults. Unless tangible action is taken against such elements, the Election Commission will be failing in implementing its Constitutional mandate of ensuring a free and fair poll,'' he said. The letter demanded that necessary action be taken immediately to instill confidence among the people to fearlessly exercise their franchise. UNI SD SW AE 1816
