New Delhi, Aug 21 (UNI) The water level in the overflowing Yamuna river began to decrease and was at 206.35 meters on Wednesday evening at around 1800 hours compared to 206.60 which was in the morning.
As the water level has started to slowly recede, the Rail traffic on the old iron bridge was restored on Wednesday evening at round 1825 hours, however, with speed restrictions, the railways said.
However, the river is still flowing above the danger mark, but it is likely to recede more between 0400 hours to 0600 hours on Thursday with water level to reduce to 205.25 meters by then.
The danger mark of the river Yamuna in Delhi is at 205.3 meters.
In the last 40 years, this time Haryana has released the maximum amount of water from the Hathni Kund barrage.
Evacuation operations are still underway at the low-lying areas on the banks of the river where people have been affected by the rising water level.
Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister has said that it is a sigh of relief that no life was lost in this situation.
He further thanked the officials who tirelessly worked in the need of the hours and relocated people into the camps and tents during the rise in the water level of the river.
'Satisfaction is that no life was lost. Thanks to the departments, officers and employees who worked hard day and night. After the water is completely recedes, we will bring all the people safely to their homes,' Delhi CM said in a tweet.
More than 15,000 people, who were living on the banks of the river, have been moved to the tents and camps, set up by the government so far.
On Monday, the old iron bridge across the river had been closed for rail and road traffic, while trains on the route had been diverted.
The Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) chairperson and other officials were present on different sites of the camps, monitoring the evacuation.
More than 30 boats from the boat club have been stationed at sensitive locations.
