New Delhi, Nov 23 (UNI) India's Sonia Chahal's stormed into the finals of women's featherweight 57kg category at the 10th AIBA Women World Boxing Championships here at Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium on Friday.
With the virtue of the semi-final win, she has become the second Indian to fight for the gold after Mary Kom (48kg) won her semi-final on Thursday.
Sonia defeated North Korea's Son Hwa Jo in a unanimous decision 5-0. The 21-year-old Indian boxer won the match 30-27, 30-27, 30-27, 29-28, 30-27.
After securing her place in the final, the Haryana boxer said, 'This was a tough bout and my opponent was also tough. I am all set to next bout and I am confident I will win the gold.'
Sonia defeated her North Korean opponent for the second time in her career.
Now, Sonia will face Ornella Gabriele Wahner of Germany in the final on Saturday.
The German defeated Jemyma Betrian of the Netherlands in a unanimous 5-0 decision to enter set up the final summit against the Indian boxer.
In 2016, Sonia clinched silver medal at the Worlds. She also emerged victorious in the national championships in 2016.
Now, she will be looking to create history by winning her first-ever gold medal at the event that too in the front of her own crowd on Saturday.
The London Olympic bronze medallist too will be looking to script history by winning a record-sixth gold at the prestigious tournament. She will take on Hanna Okhota of Ukraine in the final of women's 48 kg light flyweight category.
The 35-year-old Mary Kom had won five gold between 2002 and 2010 in the event.
She currently tied with Katie Taylor of Ireland, who has left amateur boxing, on five gold in the World Championship.
Meanwhile, in another the semi-final Simranjit Kaur (64kg) settled for bronze, losing to Dan Dou of China in a split decision (4-1).
