Dhaka, Mar 8 (UNI) Speaker of Bangladesh Jatiyo Sangsad Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury has said that women's leadership is important for facing the challenge posed by Coronavirus pandemic.
"Women are powerful and effective representative of change. Collective effort is needed to ensure more female leadership for safe and peaceful future", she said, calling for coordination between global reaction and local experiences in this regard.
The Speaker said this while addressing a discussion titled “Women in leadership: what does it take” at Bangabandhu International Centre in the capital today.
United Nations Bangladesh had organized the event.
"Half of our total population is women. Their contribution is essential from social and economic perspective. Involvement of women in the mainstream is imperative for inclusive and sustainable development", said the Speaker.
“Women are lagging behind regarding leadership in different fields. Though women’s role in different sectors, including health, is remarkable but they comprise of only 25% in leadership position”.
She called on all to work together for changing this scenario.
Chaired by Resident coordinator of UN Mia Seppo; Selima Ahmed MP, president of Bangladesh Women Chamber of Commerce and Industry; Dr Meerjadi Sabrina Flora, additional director general of Directorate of Health; Amena Begum, DIG of Bangladesh Police; were some of the others who spoke on the occasion.
UN officials in Bangladesh, and journalists were also present.
