With a record 4,343 new cases TN corona tally inches closer to one lakh mark

Chennai, Jul 02 (UNI) The COVID-19 cases in Tamil Nadu inched closer

to 1,00,000-mark on Thursday with the highest ever single-day spike

of 4,343 cases, even as the toll mounted to 1,321 with 57 more deaths.

The State's coronavirus count has now climbed to 98,392, Health Minister

Dr C Vijayabaskar told reporters.

This is the first time that positive cases crossed the 4,000-mark, ever

since first case was reported in March.

Reiterating that there was no community transmission in the State, he

said a record number of 12,35,692 samples were tested in 91 government

and private labs till date, including 33,488 samples today.

As many as 3,095 COVID-19 positive patients were discharged after

treatment today--again an all time high--and the number of recoveries

till date was 56,021. The recovery rate was 57 percent, he said.

The Minister said the State has procured live saving drugs like

Remdesivir as part of the intense measures to save the COVID-19

patients to bring down the mortality rate and the Chief Minister

has given the nod for procuring 10 lakh PCR kits for testing to

prevent the spread of the virus, in addition to the existing

five lakh kits on hand.

Till date, a total 41,047 patients were undergoing treatment,

including those in isolation and all of them were under active

medical supervision.

Of the total 1,321 deaths, 964 were reported in Chennai alone,

followed by Chengalpattu 96, Tiruvallur 79, Madurai 43, Kancheepuram

25, Villupuram 16, Ramanathapuram 14, Thiruvannamalai 11, Tirunelveli

8, Virudhunagar 7, Dindigul 6, Cuddalore 5, Erode, Pudukottai, Sivaganga,

Theni, Thoothukudi, Tiruchirapalli and Vellore 4 each, Ranipet and Salem

3 each, Kallakurichi, Karur, Krishnagiri and Thanjavur 2 each, Coimbatore,

Kanyakumari, Namakkal, Tenkasi and Airport Quarantine 1 each.

Chennai continued to top the chart with 62,598 positive cases, after it

added 2,027 fresh cases today.

Next to Chennai, Chengalpattu reported 5,807 cases, followed by Tiruvallur

4,167, Madurai 3,133, Kancheepuram 2,151, Thiruvannamalai 2,029, Vellore

1,521, Cuddalore 1,124, Ramanathapuram 1,069, Salem 1,034 and Thoothukudi


The rest of the cases were reported from other districts of the State.
